What is the Declaración de la Renta?

The Declaración de la Renta (also called Declaración del IRPF or simply "la renta") is Spain's annual income tax return. If you're a tax resident in Spain, you must declare your worldwide income each year to the Agencia Tributaria (Spanish Tax Agency, also known as "Hacienda").

What does "Declaración de la Renta" mean?

Let's break down the Spanish terminology you'll encounter:

Declaración de la Renta

Literally "Declaration of Income" - the annual tax return filed by Spanish tax residents.

IRPF (Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas)

"Personal Income Tax" - the official name for Spain's income tax. When Spaniards say "hacer la renta," they mean filing their IRPF return.

Campaña de la Renta

"Tax Season" - the filing period, typically April to June each year.

Modelo 100

The official form number for the Declaración de la Renta. This is the form you submit to Hacienda.

Good to know

In everyday Spanish, people often just say "hacer la renta" (do the renta) or "presentar la declaración" (submit the declaration). They all mean the same thing: filing your annual tax return.

Who needs to file the Declaración de la Renta?

You must file if you're a Spanish tax resident AND meet any of these conditions:

Employment income over €22,000/year

From a single employer. The threshold drops to €15,000 if you have multiple employers.

Self-employment income (autónomo)

Any amount of self-employment income requires filing.

Rental income over €1,000/year

Income from renting property in Spain or abroad.

Capital gains or investment income

Selling shares, property, crypto, or receiving dividends over €1,600.

Foreign income of any kind

As a Spanish resident, you must declare worldwide income including pensions, investments, and property abroad.

Are you a Spanish tax resident?

You're considered a tax resident if you spend more than 183 days per year in Spain, or if your main economic interests (work, business, family) are in Spain. If you're non-resident, you may need to file Modelo 210 instead.
